Anna Riess, 'Shiny Tittikeeper', ceramic object, 2023
With Tittikeeper, Anna Riess transforms the everyday storage vessel into an intimate, humorous, and subversive object. Crafted from ceramic and coated in a gleaming metallic glaze, the sculpture resembles a smooth, rounded container adorned with protruding nipples—both functional and symbolic. Playfully titled, the piece embraces bodily form as both aesthetic and utility: a keeper of things, close at hand, close to the chest.
As with much of Riess’s practice, the body—particularly the female body—is central, not idealized but rendered with warmth, wit, and presence. The shiny, almost armor-like surface contrasts with the softness the form suggests. Tittikeeper invites touch, curiosity, and a second glance. What it holds is up to the user: it may guard secrets, jewelry, daily tools, or quiet tokens of self-care.
By merging vessel and torso, object and body, Riess reflects on the many roles the female form plays—as container, protector, provider. It is both sculpture and statement: about intimacy, absurdity, and the quiet strength of holding everything together.
